2012

Michigan Green Leader Award and Michigan's 101 Best & Brightest Sustainable Companies Award
Michigan Green Leader recognizes businesses, people and organizations that are doing outstanding work to make Michigan a greener place to live and work. The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies recognizes companies that are making their businesses more environmentally and socially responsible, the lives of their employees better and the community, locally and globally, more responsible as a whole.

2010

Sustainability award for Steelcase Morocco
Steelcase Morocco was nominated on May 2010 by the ALM Ecology Trophy, organized by the Moroccan daily "Aujourd'hui le Maroc (ALM). This trophy rewards innovative actions in favor of environmental protection: Environmental management, eco-product, sustainability & environmental initiative, waste management. For this competition Steelcase presented its eco-design policy illustrated by the Think chair. We were selected with the 3 other companies on the environmental management category, and had a certificate by the jury for our 1st participation.
 

French plant earns OHSAS 18001 certificate
Steelcase Sarrebourg plant (eastern France) has achieved OHSAS 18001 certification (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series). Sarrebourg was already ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment) certified and is the second of our European plants being certified OHSAS 18001.
OHSAS 18000 is an international occupational health and safety management system specification. The OHSAS specification provides requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. It enables an organization to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance.

Steelcase receives Green Award
Steelcase received the Green Award from the International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA). The award was received during the annual round of the IFDA Excellence Awards, organized by this department in New York. The awards show appreciation to individual talents, business initiatives that have made a significant contribution in the design and furnishing community.


2009

Whisches plant earns OHSAS 18001 certificate
The plant in WISCHES (eastern France) is the first European Steelcase plant who achieved the OHSAS 18001 certificate (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series). WISCHES was already ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environment) certified. 

The OHSAS norm clarifies the rules to manage the health and safety in the working environment. It allows organisations to control the risks in these domains and to improve its performance.


2008

The Spanish Steelcase factory receives the PEFC certification
The FISP (Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme) is an organisation that deals with questions about durable development and environment management. Steelcase has received this certification received this certification thanks to its pioneering "Life Cycle Thinking" approach and sustainable manufacturing management. The FISP distinguish companies who follow an extensive audit and recognise superior sustainable business practice.

Thanks to a few measurements, the international seat of Steelcase Strasbourg pushes its ecological footprint back
The monthly analysis of the energy, water and paper consumption within the building makes an optimal policy possible. The decrease of the energy consumption is based on the use of bulbs with a low consumption; movement sensors in the hallways and staircases; the pre-programmed turning off of the lights in the building at the end of the day and the automatically adjustment of the lighting level according to the brightness outside. The rainwater stored in reservoirs is reused for the toilettes as well as an economical tap both in water and in energy, allow reduction of the water consumption. Selective sorting is omnipresent. An agreement was settled with the energy suppliers for the payment of taxes on clean energy. The carpark at the disposal of the employees counts 3 hybrid models. Finally, the education and the sensitizing of the employees towards eco-acting completes this programme.

Steelcase Inc. becomes sponsor of a wind farm
The company made a long term commitment to "Wege Wind Energy Farm" and will purchase all the green power produced by the farm for at least 5 years. The power expected to be generated by the wind farm on an annual basis represents approximately 20% of the power Steelcase USA requires.





 

Ethisphere names Allan Smith to 100 most influential people in business
This is a quarterly magazine published by Ethisphere, an international institute which aims to guide companies to ethical and responsible practices. This magazine addresses to managers and illuminates the important correlation between ethics and profit. Allan Smith, Vice President, Global Environmental Strategy and Programs at Steelcase, was ranked 79th in the international listing.


2007

100 Best Corporate Citizens
Steelcase was named one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens by Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine. Ranked number 17, Steelcase is the highest-rated of the 24 companies making a debut on this year’s list.

Madrid Environmental Prize
Steelcase Spain was awarded the 2007 Environmental Prize for its management and innovation in environmentally-friendly production methods, by the Regional Government of Madrid, the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Madrid Employers Confederation.


WasteWise Gold Achievement Award

Steelcase was honoured with a Gold Achievement Award from WasteWise, an Environmental Protection Agency program that helps U.S. organizations to reduce waste. For the 3rd year in a row Steelcase was awarded for its accomplishments in waste prevention, recycling collection and buying or manufacturing recycled content products.

Prize for Enterprise & Environment
A complete workstation (a chair, a desk and a storage unit) from Steelcase's product portfolio has been selected by the Prize for Enterprise & Environment organised by the French Government.

Multi-site PEFC certification
All European Steelcase plants have received the PEFC certification, which attests that a manufacturing plant exploits forest resources in a way that respects the environment..

C2C Product Certification: The Steelcase Leap ® chair receives McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry's (MBDC) new Cradle-to-Cradle™ Product Certification

This silver-level certification recognizes the Leap chair for its implementation of ecologically intelligent materials and cradle-to-cradle product design. (The Steelcase Think ® chair was the first ever, in 2005, to receive MBDC’s Cradle to Cradle Certification for an office furniture product).

 

 

 

 

 



Steelcase Joins EPA’s Climate Leaders Program

By participating in this US voluntary industry-government partnership aimed at developing long-term, comprehensive corporate climate change strategies, Steelcase has pledged to continue reducing its corporate-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.



Riverkeeper Annual Benefit Honors Steelcase

Steelcase was recognized for its efforts to preserve the environment and the US country's waterways. Steelcase was the only company honored at the event this year.

Habitat for Humanity of Kent County Corporate Donor of the Year Award
Steelcase recognized for project participation, volunteer effort, financial and materials support for Habitat projects, including making factory space available to build frames for housing in New Orleans, US.

Steelcase UK joins eco-friendly forces with the charity Green-Works
Steelcase has formed a partnership in the UK Green-Works, the not-for-profit social enterprise which provides redundant office furniture for re-use by schools, charities and community organisations.  By re-distributing intact pieces of furniture and remodelling damaged or worn items at their in-house joinery, Green-Works pursues a zero landfill policy and they will collect redundant furniture from Stelcase's customers.
